'Shadowlands' at Villagers Theatre

"Shadowlands" will open this weekend at Villagers Theatre in Somerset.

The play, based on actual events in the life of British writer C.S. Lewis, will run weekends Jan. 18 through Jan. 27. Performances are at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and at 2 p.m. Sundays.

"Shadowlands" tells the story of Lewis, a British Christian apologist and author of the highly successful "The Chronicles of Narnia," and his relationship with Joy Gresham.

Lewis, a confirmed bachelor, devout Anglican and reserved Oxford don, has been corresponding with Gresham, an American fan who is Jewish, the mother of a young son, and about to divorce. When she arrives in England on a visit, Lewis' Oxford friends are disdainful, suspicious and dismayed. Lewis, to his surprise, is delighted.

A sudden decision to marry Joy secretly, so that she may stay in England will be only the first in a series of uncharacteristic acts for Lewis. What happens between Christianity's great apologist and the outspoken American is destined to call into question the foundations of Lewis' theology and his understanding of both the sacred and the all-too-human heart.

"Shadowlands" is produced by Joe Buz, and directed by Marie Fiorello. For more information, contact Villagers Theatre at (732) 873-2710
