Casting Call: 'Cabaret,' 'The Colored Museum'

Interested college students and high school seniors can audition for "Cabaret" and "The Colored Museum" at Mercer County Community College later this month.

Students at Mercer County College can audition for both shows from noon-4 p.m. Jan. 25 in the studio theater at the college. There will be a student dance audition from 4:15-5:30 p.m. For high school seniors and college students not from Mercer County College, auditions will be held from 1-6 p.m. Jan. 26 . Dance auditions for those students will run from 1-2:15 p.m. and from 6-7 p.m. Jan. 26.

The shows, which will run in April and May, are being staged by the Academic Theatre Co. and E.T. Program at Mercer County College.

"Cabaret" is set in the decadent Kit Kat Klub in 1931 Berlin, against the backdrop of the emerging Nazi presence. It features 19-year-old English cabaret performer Sally Bowles and her relationship with Cliff Bradshaw, a young American writer. Notable songs include "Tomorrow Belongs to Me" and "Cabaret."

"The Colored Museum" is a play by George C. Wolfe that features 11 vignettes satirizing elements of African American culture, including "The Gospel According to Miss Roj" and "Git on Board."

To register for an audition on Jan. 26, send an e-mail to personj@mccc.edu. You must list your audition slot, full name, and requested time period in the subject line. Students also may register in person on the Studio Theatre Door/CM122 in the Communications Building at the college.

For "Cabaret" auditions, prepare 16 bars of one song and a two-minute monologue. For "The Colored Museum," prepare one two-minute monologue.

"Cabaret" will run at 8 p.m. April 5, 6, 12 and 13; and at 2 p.m. April 7 and 14. "The Colored Museum" will run at 8 p.m. May 2, 3 and 4; and at 2 p.m. May 4 and 5. Performances will take place either at the State Museum or at Trenton Hall.
