'The Uninvited' at Playhouse 22

Sometimes old houses make noises in the dark of night. Sometimes it isn't the house.

"The Uninvited" opens Feb. 15 at Playhouse 22. The play tells the story of Pam Fitzgerald and her brother Roddy, an aspiring playwright. Seeking to escape the demands of life in London, they discover a charming house in the west of England, overlooking the Irish Sea. The house long has been empty, and they are able to purchase it at a low price from crusty Commander Brooke, the village curmudgeon.

The reason is soon apparent: The house has an unsavory reputation. Fifteen years earlier a murder may or may not have occurred by the gnarled tree that can be viewed from the parlor window. Slowly the Fitzgeralds begin to sense the evil spirit that still inhabits the house, announcing its presence with a sudden, bone-chilling cold.

Directed by Robert Gargiullo, the cast features Rachel Elise Green, Amy Brandt, Joe Zedeny, Gregory Newton, Stephanie Long, Deby Brandt, Bess Allison, Michael Pilato, Rupert Ravens and Nancy Drumright.

Playhouse 22 is located at 721 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick.

The show runs at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and at 3 p.m. Sunday matinees Feb. 15-March 2. For more information, call (732)254-3939 or visit www.Playhouse22.org.

'Waiting for Godot' at Edison Valley Playhouse

The waiting is over ... or is it?

"Waiting for Godot," the existentialist tragicomedy by Samuel Beckett, opens this weekend at Edison Valley Playhouse.

The play tells the story of two men, named Vladimir and Estragon, who wait by a tree for a man named Godot to come as he has promised. The passage of time is unclear, the nature of memory is uncertain, and there is an endless debate concerning whether they should leave or continue their endless vigil. The play is absurd, but tragically so.

Some have seen in Beckett's play a parable about how we fill the empty spaces in our lives. Others see in it a story about waiting for God, a tale of hope endlessly deferred, or even a commentary on human existence.

Not only is the play considered a classic; it was required reading at one time in your life, or will be in the coming years. Enjoy Beckett's absurdity onstage as Edison Valley Playhouse presents the rarely done "Waiting for Godot."

Directed by Bill Martinek, "Waiting for Godot" features David Learn, Joe Penczak, Wayne Rossignol, Ryan Miller and Aaron Penzel as the boy. Edison Valley Playhouse is located at 2196 Oak Tree Road, Edison, N.J.

Tickets cost $15 for adults, or $12 for seniors and students. For more information or for tickets, call (908) 755-4654 or visit www.evplayhouse.com.

'Shadowlands' at Villagers Theatre

"Shadowlands" will open this weekend at Villagers Theatre in Somerset.

The play, based on actual events in the life of British writer C.S. Lewis, will run weekends Jan. 18 through Jan. 27. Performances are at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and at 2 p.m. Sundays.

"Shadowlands" tells the story of Lewis, a British Christian apologist and author of the highly successful "The Chronicles of Narnia," and his relationship with Joy Gresham.

Lewis, a confirmed bachelor, devout Anglican and reserved Oxford don, has been corresponding with Gresham, an American fan who is Jewish, the mother of a young son, and about to divorce. When she arrives in England on a visit, Lewis' Oxford friends are disdainful, suspicious and dismayed. Lewis, to his surprise, is delighted.

A sudden decision to marry Joy secretly, so that she may stay in England will be only the first in a series of uncharacteristic acts for Lewis. What happens between Christianity's great apologist and the outspoken American is destined to call into question the foundations of Lewis' theology and his understanding of both the sacred and the all-too-human heart.

"Shadowlands" is produced by Joe Buz, and directed by Marie Fiorello. For more information, contact Villagers Theatre at (732) 873-2710
