Casting Call: 'And Then There Were None'

The only mystery right now is who will be cast for the show.

Westfield Community Players will hold auditions next month for an upcoming production of "And Then There Were None." Directed by Steve Lemenlle, the show is based on the Agatha Christie novel about 10 strangers who are invited to an island where someone begins killing them one at a time. As the victims pile up, the list of suspects dwindles until the story reaches its surprise conclusion.

Auditions will run from 7-9:30 p.m. July 11, 12 and 14. Characters should be able to speak with an English accent. Sides will be provided. Audition forms are available on the theater's web site.

The theater is located at 1000 North Ave. W., Westfield. Performances are scheduled for Oct. 15, 22, 23, 28 and 29.

The cast of characters:

SIR LAWRENCE WARGRAVE - (male) [stage age: 50's-60's] A recently retired judge. Wargrave is a highly intelligent older man with a commanding personality. As the characters begin to realize that a murderer is hunting them, Wargrave's experience and air of authority make him a natural leader for the group.

VERA CLAYTHORNE - (female) [stage age: 20's-30's] A former governess who comes to the island purportedly to serve as a secretary to their absent hostess, Mrs. Owen. Vera is one of the most intelligent and capable characters in the play, but she also suffers from attacks of hysteria, feels guilty about her supposed crime, and reacts nervously to the uncanny events on the island.

PHILIP LOMBARD - (male) [stage age: 30's-40's] A mysterious, confident, and resourceful man who seems to have been a mercenary soldier in Africa. Lombard is far bolder and more cunning than most of the other characters, traits that allow him to survive. He also has an interest in Vera.

WILLIAM BLORE - (male) [stage age: 30's-40's] A former police inspector. Blore is a man whose experience often inspires others to look to him for advice. He acts boldly and frequently takes initiative, but he also makes frequent blunders.

DR. ARMSTRONG - (male) [stage age: 40's-60's] A gullible, fussy and slightly timid doctor. Armstrong often draws the suspicion of the other guests because of his medical knowledge.

EMILY BRENT - (female) [stage age: 50's-60's] An older, ruthlessly religious spinster who is disagreeable and suspicious.

GENERAL MACKENSIE - (male) [stage age: 60s] The oldest guest. An upright soldierly old man with a gentle and tired face, often gets lost in his thoughts.

TOM ROGERS - (male) [stage age: 40's-50's] A competent manservant who is quick and deft but just a bit shifty.

MRS. ROGERS - (female) [stage age: 40's-50's] Tom Rogers's wife. At first, Ethel is opinionated and seems fine, but underneath Ethel is a frail woman.

ANTHONY MARSTON - (male) [stage age: 20's] A rich, athletic, handsome youth. Tony Marston likes to drive recklessly and seems to lack a conscience.

FRED NARRAGOTT - (male) [stage age: 30's-40's] A delivery person that also provides ferry service to and from the island.

'Veronica's Room' at Westfield Community Players

Westfield Community Players' production of "Veronica's Room," a chilling mystery thriller by "Rosemary's Baby" author Ira Levin, will open this May.

Students Susan and Larry find themselves as guests at the Brabissant mansion, enticed there by its dissolute caretakers, the lonely Mackeys. Struck by Susan's strong resemblance to Veronica Brabissant, the long-dead daughter of the family for whom they work, the Mackeys persuade her to briefly impersonate Veronica to solace the only living Brabissant, her addled sister who believes Veronica alive. Once dressed in Veronica's clothes, Susan finds herself locked in the role and locked in Veronica's room. Or is she Veronica, in 1935, pretending to be an imaginary Susan?

The show opens at 8 p.m. May 7 and runs at the same time May 13, 14 and 21 and at 2 p.m. May 22. The show features Janice Lynn, Victor Gallo, Kelly Kline, and Ross Pohling. It is directed by Brian Remo and produced by Jessica Foerst.

'Tribute' at Westfield Community Players

"Tribute" will open at Westfield Community Players in a few weeks.

Scottie Templeton's a charming, irresponsible fellow. A sometime Broadway press agent and former scriptwriter, he's everyone's friend, nobody's hero and a great womanizer who's managed to live over fifty years without taking anything seriously, including love, marriage and fatherhood. Life's been one continuous gag. But at fifty one, he finds the script's been rewritten as a tragedy: he is fatally ill. His son Jud, alienated by years of neglect, comes to visit. Scottie's one concern is to make friends with his son, and after a bitter, revealing confrontation, father and son are reconciled. And it is Jud who gets Scottie to agree to be rehospitalized for treatment and then organizes a giant tribute to his father in a theater.

The cast features Russ Ortiz as Scottie Templeton, Bobby Marusiefski as Jud Templeton, Dickson Lane as Leo Daniels, Marguerite Wurtz as Dr. Gladys Petrelli, Katie Engel as Sally Haines, Debbie Badal as Maggie Stratton, and Kathryn Risi as Hilary. It is directed by Steve Lemenille.

The show is set in the lobby of a dilapidated old hotel. Despite its run-down, sometimes repulsive nature, the hotel's inhabitants have a personal relationship to the Hotel Baltimore and to their neighbors living in it. The play is comprised of a series of conversations between the residents of the hotel, who are contemplating an uncertain future after the hotel is condemned and scheduled for demolition.

The show features Leslie Riccie as Mrs. Bellotti, Sabrina Iacobellis as the Girl, Mike Petritsch as Paul Granger III, Jeanette Ricci as April Green, Roxanne Guarino as Jackie, Matt Coakley as Jamie, Peter Twill as Mr. Katz, Peter Curley as Bill Lewis, Linda Correll as Millie, Kate Murray as Suzy, Scott Avery as Mr. Morse, Al Contursi as Mr. Oxenham and Suzy's John, Phil Sarpong as a cab driver, and Noah Sokolsky as a pizza delivery boy. It is directed by Beatriz Esteban-Messina, produced by Lucille Bills and stage managed by Barbara Ruban.

When Katz makes it clear that her son will not be allowed to return, she goes upstairs and begins to pack his belongings.
the Girl (18+)	A young prostitute, the Girl is caring and concerned about the other residents. She goes to great effort to help Morse. It is she who tells Jackie that she has bought worthless land.
April Green (30+)	A prostitute; described as large, pragmatic, quick to laugh, pretty, and foul-mouthed. Protective of Suzy.
Jackie (20+)	A hustler traveling with her brother, Jamie. She needs money and tries to get Katz to co-sign a loan so they can go Utah to grow health foods on a worthless piece of land she has bought. She steals jewelry from Morse's room, but is caught and ordered to leave. She tells Jamie that she is going to buy gas, but never returns to pick him up.
Jamie (20+)	Jackie's brother. A bit slow. In the last act, Jamie is abandoned by his sister, who simply drives off and leaves him to manage on his own.
Mr. Katz (35+)	The hotel manager. A balding, tired man. Gives the residents one month's notice because the hotel is to be torn down.
Bill Lewis (30+)	The night clerk at the hotel. He has a difficult time communicating and covers by talking too loudly. Bill is interested in the Girl and is more tolerant with her than the other hotel employees.
Millie (50+)	A retired waitress. Considered eccentric, she believes in ghosts and lives in a world more imagined than real.
Paul Granger (20+)	A college student who was arrested for selling drugs. He has recently been released from a work farm, and comes to the hotel to look for his grandfather.
Mrs. Oxenham (~45)	Day desk clerk. Quick speaking with no commerce.
Suzy (~30)	A prostitute. Hopelessly romantic, but hard as nails.
Mr. Morse (~70)	Craggy with a high cracking voice. He has much energy and outrage in spite of moving slowly.

In addition to those listed above, there are three minor characters: Suzy's John, a cab driver, and a delivery boy.

The first day of auditions was October 20; remaining auditions will occur from 6:30-9:00 p.m. October 22. Performances will run at 8 p.m. January 9, 16, 22 and 23; and at 2 p.m. January 17. If auditionees wish, they may submit an audition form in advance.

'Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike' Special Performance

At 8 p.m. October 16, Westfield Community Players will hold an additional performance of "Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike" to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project, a program dedicated to assisting injured veterans.


Vanya and his adopted sister Sonia live a quiet life in the Pennsylvania farmhouse where they grew up, but their peace is disturbed when their movie star sister Masha returns unannounced with her twenty-something boy toy, Spike. A weekend of rivalry, regret, and raucousness begins.

The show features Garry Tamburro as Vanya, Sharon McGuire as Sonia, Debbie Badal as Masha, Ross Pohling as Spike, Melissa Mugica as Nina, and Vikki Massulli as Cassandra. It is directed by Linda Viel.

Tickets cost $20 per adult and $10 per student or active military personnel. 50% of the proceeds will go to the Wounded Warrior Project.

'Almost, Maine' at Westfield Community Players

Westfield Community Players will perform John Cariani's "Almost, Maine."

The show performs at 8 p.m. on Jan. 10, 16, 17, 18, 23, and 24. Tickets are $20, or $10 for students and active military personnel. New Orleans comes to New Jersey this month,when Westfield Community Players presents Tennessee Williams' Pulizer-winning drama, "A Streetcar Named Desire."

Directed by Brian Remo and produced by Steve Lemenille, the show opens at 8 p.m. May 10, at Westfield Community Players, 1000 North Ave. W., Westfield. The show will include performances at 8 p.m. May 17, 30 and 31; and at 3 p.m. May 11 and May 18.
